Thank you for your participation in Sloat Stride on one of the hottest days of the year! It’s such a fun way to get our community together while also raising funds for our kids. A special thanks to our Stride announcer, coach and inspiration, Ms. Denise Lujan! Sloat Stride couldn’t have happened without help from our amazing Sloat community. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped prep for the event, helped out the day of the event, and everyone who is (or will be!) helping out post-stride. We are also so thankful for the great spirit shown by the teachers and Principal John.

Now it’s time to collect the sponsor money! Invoices will start going out by email today and in Wednesday envelopes this week & next. Please email if yours is missing or needs any corrections. Pledges are still coming in! It’s not too late. If you forgot to turn in your pledges or realized you never asked Uncle Al like you meant to, you can drop them in the PCO box or enter them online at

Thank you for supporting our school and efforts to raise money.

Prizes will be determined after the pledges are entered.

GARDEN CLUB – SUNDAY. OCT. 26 10am-1pm

Come, get your hands dirty and help us keep our garden and green spaces looking vibrant! Projects for the day include planting the trellis and bench area, some light weeding, replacing some of the plants we lost over the summer in the new tree beds, and planting a lower yard “lawn” where our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders can eat lunch and hang out during recess. We need YOU to help us maintain the amazing green spaces we are so lucky to have at Sloat. Please join us!

We plan to make Garden Club a recurring event (separate from Green Up Clean Up, where we clean more than just the green spaces) where the community can come dig in the dirt, plant, harvest and give our garden the extra love it needs to thrive. Stay tuned for more info on future dates and join us for our kickoff on Oct. 26th!

Also, a big thanks to the Potts family for helping with the garden last weekend. They spent a long Saturday working with Ms. Ady to replace the beds in the garden and make it ready for fall crops! Our campus stays beautiful because of all the hard work from individuals in the community. Be sure to thank the Potts family if you see them!

Today was our Native American assembly. Eddie Madril of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe performed during morning circle at 8:40am on the upper yard.

We will then have 2 assemblies with history, storytelling, sign language, and dancing:
8:50-10am for grades K-2
10:40-11:40 for grades 3-5

Observance of the Indigenous People’s holiday is Monday, October 13th.

Proof Forms for all students will be coming home today in the Wednesday Envelope. Included are ordering instructions, as well as an access code for online ordering. To receive free shipping, please be sure to place your order before this date. After the deadline has passed the school will no longer accept paper proof order forms, and all orders placed online will ship direct to home. Please note the photo printed on your student’s ID card will be selected automatically by Shooting Stars.

If you do not receive your proof sheet in your envelope today (please double check backpacks), check in with your student’s teacher, or contact Shooting Stars at, or (800) 311-7784 x11.

Pumpkin Patch: On Friday October 24, we turn our garden into a pumpkin patch. All children get to pick a pumpkin. We are asking $1 per child to help cover costs. Help needed to set up before classes arrive, help kids find pumpkins and write names on them, help arrange class photo, and clean up! Please sign-up today!

Tour Volunteers: Share your love of our school! Help prospective families learn about our school — you probably know more than you think! Brian and Nevada will show you the ropes — don’t be shy! Share the love — it’s a quick hour on Tuesday mornings 9-10am, and helps the school. Sign-up:

Translators: If you or your family benefit from Chinese translations, or if you are close to someone who can help — please consider helping us with this task for our Communications team. We could use a few people to help translate documents for Wednesday envelopes and other school communications that go out. This is a great work-from-home position that can be sent via email. Email

Handy with tools? Need help mounting flat screen tv: Hope Burns, our school social worker, needs a parent who can mount a small flat screen on her office wall. She will use this for meetings. She needs this done ASAP to watch movies with the kids that won, “Movie time with Ms. Burns!”

2014 California Great Shake Out Disaster Preparedness and Fundraiser

The California Great Shake Out takes place Thursday, October 16th. SFUSD students will participate in earthquake and evacuation drills. Commodore Sloat will sell Right Response first aid and Earth Shakes earthquake kits supporting family and home preparedness.
